Has Country Music Finally Gone Digital?

We are DEFINITELY getting there… well the fans anyway. Let me explain.

As fans continue to demand what they want when they want all of the music industry has struggled to keep up.  Some genres like Pop and Rock tend to have a younger demographic so those fans have been quicker to adopt and more demanding than the older, not-as-tech-savvy Country Music fans.  BUT…

Country Music fans are getting younger and more technologically advanced in their increasingly complicated and busy lives.

How do you know that Ben?  Well, after looking at all the data from the largest Country Music festival in the world (CMA Music Festival, held every June in Nashville) the results are very promising!

Without getting into specifics, CMA members can email me for those, the digital marketing effort put forth by CMA for the event was a huge success and the fans really responded to it.  Here are the highlights:

Best Practices: Online Video

Pretty. Blonde. Country Singers.

So I ran the numbers for our online video views for March 2010.  Eight of the Top 10 all starred a pretty, blonde, Country Music singer.  We have about 100 videos we’ve posted over the last 2 years.  Darius Rucker, Zac Brown Band, Lady Antebellum and tons of other A-List talent.  There is behind-the-scenes footage, man on the street footage, artist interview footage and other fun video footage we’ve aggregated to help promote our CMA Music Festival and CMA Awards.

No matter what our most viewed videos seem to always star Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Kellie Pickler, Miranda Lambert and Julianne Hough.

I’m not passing judgement on the artists, viewers or anything in between.  I’m simply re-stating what the data has alread told us.  We are looking into creating more compelling, more viral video concepts for this year’s events.

Stay tuned and I’ll let y’all know how it goes.

I’ve been listening to 95.9 The Ranch (KFWR) for that last hour or so, online. These guys GET IT. They have created something that is truly REMARKABLE. When you listen to the Ranch you know you’re listening to the Ranch. They aren’t trying to make everyone happy all the time. They picked a very focused target, Texas Country Music Fans, and ran with it.

The other two stations in Dallas/Ft. Worth are very very very similar. They play the same mainstream acts such as Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift, George Strait, Montgomery Gentry over and over, sometimes at the same time. Now, I used to be a HUGE fan of The Wolf (KPLX) but the dream team that built it is long gone to other parts of radio and country music. Of course, KPLX and KSCS are the two dominant country stations but I firmly believe that is due to signal strength. The Ranch’s signal can only be heard in Ft. Worth and west, The West-O-Plex as the Ranch DJs have dubbed it.

I only hope they have a strategic marketing and advertising plan to ensure they maximize the brand and listenership to ensure they aren’t made to flip to a more mainstream country format or god forbid a different format altogether.
